The Unexpected: Fort Smith’s Mural Scene

In just the last handful of years, Fort Smith, AR has become a mecca of urban and contemporary art all thanks to The Unexpected, a downtown revitalization project created by 64.6 Downtown. As a member of this nationwide network, Fort Smith, along with more than 1,200 neighborhoods and communities, is committed to both creating high-quality places and building stronger communities through preservation-based economic development. As part of Fort Smith’s revitalization efforts, the Unexpected is a collection of magnificent mural art throughout much of downtown and beyond. There are many pieces within walking distance of each other and each reflecting the artist’s unique style and as well as transforming Fort Smith into a cultured hub of contemporary art in Arkansas. 

The Unexpected project began in 2015 and has transformed downtown Fort Smith into a world-class destination for urban and contemporary public art. The growing collection of permanent and semipermanent outdoor art now includes more than 30 pieces by highly sought-after international artists. The project culminates in an annual, week-long festival that adds to the unexpected collection and offers augmented activities expanding on art, music, and thought to create an enhanced cultural experience in downtown Fort Smith.

This mural by Brazilian artist duo Bicicleta Sem Freio is facing the parking lot at the 800 block Garrison Avenue. 

This mural is located in the Goins Furniture alley on Garrison Avenue and was done by Jaz Pastel.
